Srinagar, Jan 03 (KNO): Amid the rise in Covid-19 cases globally, preparations are going on to make genome sequencing lab functional at Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu. A top health official told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that genome sequencing lab will be ready soon. He said that all positive samples will undergo genome sequencing so as to check out possible new variants. As of now J&K has no whole genome sequencing lab due to which tests were being sent to NCDC Delhi from where reports were coming very late. Following the second wave of Covid-19 J&K, the government had planned to set up two genome sequencing labs one each in Srinagar and Jammu. But they couldn’t be set up until now. News agency KNO had carried a series of stories about the need of genome sequencing labs in J&K which are very few in entire country. Earlier, officials at GMC Srinagar claimed that they are going to make genome sequencing lab functional within a week's time. Meanwhile doctors from different hospitals said that as of now there is no upward trend of Covid-19 cases in J&K. They, however, advised people to take precautions and go for vaccination and booster doses—(KNO)
